Yesterday afternoon was the culmination of months of hard work and dedication. It was the first time I was put to the test to plan and carry out an event. This event was a seminar organized as a course requirement for CCM726: Event Planning in the Corporate Communications program at Seneca College. Since we were given free rein, I joined forces with the other passionate sports fans in my class. Together, we created “The Locker Room: A Behind the Scenes Look at Sports Media Relations.”
The purpose of the seminar was to increase awareness of the importance media relations in the sports industry. This impact was displayed through the different perspectives of key players in the industry: media relations practitioners, athletes and members of the media. The expertise of the panelists provided corporate communications students will a broader range of experience and a better understanding of the industry.
The panel of experts included:
Ashton Lawrence, Player and Media Relations Officer, Right to Play Canada
Adam Orrico, Communications and Player Relations, Toronto Argonauts Football Club
Mike Farwell, Morning Sports Anchor, Sportsnet 590 The Fan / Kitchener Rangers Analyst, 570 News
Brandon Maxwell, professional hockey goaltender
The event was held at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence, which is the first community ice facility to be built in the Toronto-area in the last 25 years, also serving as the Maple Leafs and Marlies practice facility.
